Fedora Installation :: Can Not Get To Log On Screen
Aug 25, 2010
I am running Fedora 13 64 bit with NVIDIA video drivers.Everything has been going well with all updates until the update down loaded today. It installed kernel 2.6.33.8-149 Fc13.x86 among a few other files. It asked for a restart and now I can not get to the log on screen.Everything seems to boot through the start up but there is no log on screen. I just get a blank screen with the cursor in the top left.If I type from the keyboard I can see some letters etc appear but nothing else.I am not sure but it seems to me that the NVIDIA modules used with the previous kernel may not be compatible with the new kernel or they have not recompiled.
I have now booted into the previous kernel and eveythiong seems to be working.Question how can I remove the NVIDIA drivers from the new kernel so I can run the system in "X" or how do I load new NVIDIA drivers to the new kernel so I can use it. This unless some one else knows of another problem that gives this result. It is just that I did not see any NVIDIA driver files in the listing for the new kernel.

I'm trying to install F11 on my old FSC Amilo Pro laptop. The installer starts fine, shows up on the screen fine, but the graphic installation window is wrongly positioned on the screen. It's about 300px too far to the right and about 300px too low on the screen, so that my Next, Back, Cancel buttons etc are off the screen.

I installed F12 with the i686 KDE livecd. A black screen with a blink "-" appeared after the bios information on the first reboot. The computer does not respond to any key input except "ctrl+alt+del", which restarts the computer. The machine is a dell inspiron 6000 with inboard 915gm video card, and the bootloader was written to the harddrive mbr. Any help would be highly appreciated.I need to be more clear. Installation went fine, problem appeared on the first reboot.

Computer: Dual AMD 280 Processors, Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895 Motherboard, 8x 2GB DIMMs.
Installed Fedora 10 86x64 from ISO burned to a DVD. Installation went ok, and computer needed to be rebooted at the end of the installation. Upon restart, Fedora 10 loaded to initial setup screen where user name, date, time, etc are set. At the end, as this is a stand-alone computer, the setup requests to send data of computer setup to Fedora.org and this request has to be denied. Pressing the Finish button ends up killing the system. The system doesn't reboot, what does happen is that the screen goes to black, and no signal is given to the monitor; the system hangs at this state. I've tried to see if giving the setup the ability to send the system data would change the end state upon pressing Finish, but nothing changes.

I've been trying to install Fedora 10 Core to a new my machine. The live CD appears to boot, but once I get beyond the selection stage (installing or running Fedora from the disk first), I invariably get a fully white screen. Nothing I've tried to do changes this. Although I'm reasonably experienced with the command line, I've never tried to do a GUI-less install of a full OS, and am unsure how/if to begin with Fedora. Any suggestions for either fixing the white screen of death, and/or installing from the command line would be a big help.

After I upgraded F11 to F12 on an x86_64, the new system boots and the daemons come up, then the screen goes black and the computer restarts. But then it won't boot at all. It just keeps restarting. It could be a monitor driver problem. The one time I managed to press "I" fast enough to bring GRUB up, I tried adding "nomodeset". Nothing changed. The monitor is an HP 2009m, so it should not need "nomodeset" anyway. Xfree86.cf has not changed from F11 to F12.
I have a full DVD, so I can bring up Rescue Mode. I had hoped to find clues in (/mnt/sysimage)/var/log/messages, but nothing is being written to it. Once after I rebooted off the hard disk from Rescue Mode, I witnessed a long SElinux conversion. That disquiets me. But disabling SElinux does not solve the problem either. Can anyone suggest some kernel options that might overcome this problem? I shrink from reinstalling F11 from scratch and having to restore all my files from my backup system!P.S. I just found in my personal X11 log a message to the effect that /usr/lib64/dvi/nouveau_dri.so is missing. So it is; the directory has 12 drivers and not this one. If I remember right, "nouveau" often figures in trouble reports.P.P.S. As myself in Rescue Mode I can use xinit to bring X up! But it has only a vanilla text window and no mouse cursor, so I cannot use it or get out of it.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

complete trying newbie trying to get to grips with linux. Tried ubuntu and didnt like that so someone suggested fedora. I'm having the same problem I had with ubuntu, I get a white screen when trying to load the graphical install after the media test. On ubuntu this was solved by selecting simple graphics mode. Here I have tried the following commands during install with still no luck
The text install just freezes after selecting the keyboard layout so that does not even work. Tried searching for forums but only solutions I could find where the previous.

I've been trying to install Fedora 10 but the screen flickers about once every two seconds (not at set intervals though sometimes 5 seconds sometimes < 1 second).I've been searching around and all posts I've read about hh ave pointed to an nVidia driver bug which would make sense since I have an nVidia card but these were all posted back in summer of '08 so I'm not sure if it is still lingering.

I am using Mercury p4VM800 mother Board and Intel PIV 2 GHz Processor. I have installed the fedora 10 Today. My screen resolution was automatically set to 650x480 and this is the only option available in graphical mode. I am not able to increase the resolution to 1024x768. I once again reinstalled the F10. during the installation, in the boot: option I have entered 'linux resolution=1024x768', but it won't work.

I was able to get Fedora 10 to run on VirtualBox. Since the system wouldn't let me set the resolution to anything bigger than 800 x 600, I decided to get the nVidia driver (I'm running the nVidia 8400m G). I did it through this guy's tutorial: [URL]... After rebooting, I see the loading bars and everything, but I get a blank screen with a cursor. After pressing ctrl+alt+F3, I was able to log in to the root and execute the "akmod builds the required kmod on bootup" under the "For GeForce 8 series" [URL]... After a reboot, I still get the same thing. Will I have to reinstall Fedora 10 and just not update the nVidia graphics drivers? I have a 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600 x 1050 and I would really like to take advantage of that.

I am trying to install Fedora10 on a eeeBox, where I understand the graphic card is highly irregular. After the initial loading (the white/blue ASCII-art bar in the bottom) I get a black screen and that's all.If I Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a text screen and, as advised, do "init 3" and then "Xorg -configure" and restart the server with the new config - the same happens. Just a blank screen..

I have a Dell Latitude E5500. For some time I've been installing different distros on it to find which is best suited for my needs. I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva, openSuSE, Fedora, and several others. So far, openSuSE takes the cake in terms of what I need, speed, usability, etc. However, I have a soft spot for Fedora and I'm trying so hard to make things work, but I'm kind of at the end of the road unless you guys have some suggestions.
I was in the IRC chat for Fedora asking around, and one user was kind enough to point me in this direction, which made sense as to why I was having issues.
[url]
I was having mixed results, but I had also installed from a Fedora KDE LiveCD. I decided I'd try the full DVD release of Fedora 12 64 bit, so I installed it this evening.
To my disappointment, even the nomodeset parameter does nothing. I get to the blue screen where there's some kind of logo in the center that fills in with white. After it fills in, an F appears. That's where it stops. It just goes no further. Further adding to the confusion is the fact that the fix lists a kernel there, indicating (to me at least) that the kernel listed is when a fix was deployed. I have a newer kernel than that, and despite that I still have these issues.
So needless to say, I'm using my laptop as testing grounds to plop a different distro than Ubuntu on my laptop and 2 servers full time. I really want to make Fedora work, but at the same time I have to use what works for me. Not being able to boot and log in is kind of a big deal. :P
Is there anything I can do or try? I want to keep the OS's I run all the same, so if Fedora 12 bombs out on this laptop, it has no chance on the other servers I plan to run at work. So far openSuSE is running without a hitch but I'd really like to give Fedora 12 a chance....
