View 3 RepliesMy favorite IM application, Pidgin, have been causing me some problems with it's new release (2.9.0).More specifically I can't see friends which are visible in normal versions of MSN or hotmail web interface, even though I have searched any options available thoroughly. Also some of my contacts can see me online but cannot message me.
Therefore, I would like to install an older version to find out whether these problems are version or application related. However the only available version is 2.9.0 and I would like to downgrade to an older version, let's say 2.6.0 but I have no idea on how to do that.
How do I install Pidgin on Fedora 11? I do not find it in yum or System -> Administration -> Add/Remove Software. The Pidgin download page says they don't provide packages for Fedora 8 or later: http://www.pidgin.im/download/fedora_core/

Is there a way to install the Pidgin IM client without installing the Evolution data server? I'm in F12KDE (spin) and have no need for the evolution server and really don't want it on my machine, but the KDE chat client (Kopete) is very buggy and won't connect to my gmail IM account.

I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

View 2 Replies View RelatedPreviously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.

View 8 Replies View RelatedBeen a slackware user for over a year now and this is the first time I've run into this exact little problem. Pidgin's most current version in the official repository is 2.7.9, and I want to upgrade to it's latest version (2.7.10). There is no slackbuild for it on slacky.eu or slackbuilds org, the official repo hasn't added .10 in the week that its been out so I'm not holding my breath on an update anytime soon. I suppose I 'could' install it the old fashioned way (make/make install/etc), but I'm not sure what kind of effect this would have on the current installation, or if it would break itself or whatever. Is there a way to get pidgin 2.7.10 installed without having to do it this way?

I did a "yum install thunderbird" to get the thunderbird emal program. I got a beta version: thunderbird 3 beta 4.Is Fedora so bleeding edge that this should have happened? I have not changed the repositories that the installation of FC11 uses.(I haven't used 3 beta 4 enough to have any complaints about how it works.)

I have a Sun Fire X4450 running RHEL 5.3. Attached to this server via FC is a Sun StorageTek ST2540 that allows additional storage capacity. In order to administer the ST2540, a software application from Sun (CAM 6.6) has been installed. Part of the install process for this application also installs Java JDK1.6.0_12 (64-bit).
However as we use this hardware as a database server, our database software will not install properly as it requires an earlier version of Java JDK1.5.0_11 to be installed. When I try and install the older JDK rpm package, RHEL will not let me. How can I get both versions of Java installed?

I had to remove pidgin because I thought it would fix the annoying SSL error.
