Fedora :: Display Setup With F12 And Shuttle SN41G2V2
Apr 23, 2010
I've had display problems with Fedora 12. My monitor could display 1600*1200 in Fedora 7, but I'm having a struggle with F12. I can get 1600x1200 using the nouveau driver but after lots of experimentation, I'm left with:
1. The top line of pixels seems to be repeated 8 - 10 times, shifting the display content downwards so that the bottom few lines of the display content disappear. The mouse cursor can reach the whole of the display but "points to" and "clicks on" part of the display content which appears a few pixels below it.
2. A few pixels of the display content are cropped from the left hand edge of the screen.
Things I've tried:
1. Tried **many** different modelines in xorg.conf and , this is the one I'm using at the moment: ModeLine "1600x1200@50" 162.0 1600 1616 1736 2160 1200 1201 1206 1248 +hsync +vsync I don't know whether all the parameters match up, the monitor flickers a bit at logon so I guess they don't (e.g. the monitor display reckons it's on a 60Hz refresh). At least the display is basically usable though.
2. Tried nouveau, nvidia, nv and vesa drivers - nouveau is the only one which gives 1600x1200.
3. Tried xvidtune, but it complains "Unable to query monitor info" and exits.
System Hardware:
System: Shuttle SN41G2V2/ Athlon XP 3000/ 1GB - "VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] (rev a3)" Monitor: Dell 2007FP (1600x1200 native resolution) connected via standard VGA connection - has previously worked at 1600x1200 using Fedora 7
System Software Fedora 12 (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE); installed where F7 used to be (and Mandrake before that!), but /home lives on a separate partition and has not been changed.

I am Currently attempting to set up a Dual Screen setup at my work but seem to be having some strange results. For some reason the O/S is only recognising one of the monitors, it knows exactly what the Make and model of the monitor is but doesnt appear to know that there is another monitor plugged in. It constantly says that there is 2 screens plugged in but lists the second screen as "CRT-0" even if no DVI cable is plugged into the second screen. This has really troubled me and has really got me thinking. I have set-up other Dual-screen setups with exactly the same hardware previously and it has worked fine? I am using a Lenovo A58 Tower with an Nvidia Quadro FX-380 Graphics card that I know is capable of dual Dual-link DVI output! With 2 x LG W3000-H Monitors running Fedora 12.

This shuttle xpc (model#SA76G2) using Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9ghz dual core, 1Gb ram, won't boot properly from live cd's. Tried Puppy, Antix, Knoppix 5.1 & 6.0, Lenny 5.03. All exhibit slight differences...Puppy can't find the system and drops to command line, Antix and Lenny, after booting go to a crazy video mode, hence no display and knoppix just shows two penguins. These cd's work just fine on other machines.
It's not my computer, so I'm not going to fret about this. But I would like to know what the heck is going on.

Have used Linux for a long time, but never set up a system myself. It is my intention to get a barebones system from Shuttle called "SG41J1 PLUS" and run Linux on it.
This has the following H/W components:
- Intel Core2 Quad
- Chipset Intel G41 + ICH7
- VGA Intel X4500
- Sound IDT 92HD89C
- Ethernet Marvell 88E8057
Can I assume that the Intel ICH7 would be supported and the graphics too ?
For the Ethernet controller I obtained drivers (source code) from the manufacturer, so I hope this should be fine.
For the sound chip I don't know yet whether I could get drivers. Are there any ? I had a look at the ALSA project's site but could not see exactly this sound chip mentioned.
Should I expect any problem if I wanted to run a 64-bit version of Linux on that machine ?

I just got my new Shuttle SG41J1 v2. Everything works fine under 10.10 except audio. I can hear sound at the headphone-jack on the frontpanel but the jack on the rear isn't working. I tried different models in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (3stack, 5stack, test), nothing helped. All channels in alsamixer are unmuted and the sliders turned up. In the output of alsa-info.sh I can see Nodes for all jacks (Speaker, Mic and Line-In at Ext-Rear for example) but alsamixer and all other mixer-applications I tried shows only Master, PCM, Front Mic, Line, Mic and Aux (all in the Playback section). Also I found nothing in /usr/ share/doc/ alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz about my Codec "IDT ID 76c1".

I had a shuttle box quad core amd running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit. Anyway it was always losing it's bios settings so I presumed the battery was flat. Since the shuttle had always been a little twitchy apic had to be disabled etc to get thing to boot into Linux. I decided to move the install over to another Shuttle XPC SG31G2 V1 model which was running Windows 7 without any problems.
Got it running surprisingly easy as I expected a full re-install jobby but I quickly reconfigured it and it was loading into X properly. However the bios settings also get reset on power off. All seems very strange to me. Any ideas bar booting of a live cd and see if the same happens???

I'm on 5.4 with a Shuttle X50 and am having a lot of trouble getting sound working on this box. In Gnome the card is detected properly and nothing is muted, but no sound comes out of the speakers when I do the test. Checked in the bios and the audio is enabled so I'm stumped... heres some info for reference:

kubuntu 10.04.
1. in the user I used for system installation, my monitor works fine
2. in the user I created later - same rights - monitor is set for 60Hz. This is the only option in System Settings/Display
3. there's only xorg.conf.failsafe in /etc/X11, which seems to what the second user is using
Where is the display/video card set up in Kubuntu 10.04? Why are different users use different settings? Can I copy from one to the other?

I'm running OS 11.2 with KDE4. I have to use the fglrx driver,as I could not get XBMC working with radeon or radeonhd. Well, fglrx works OK, however it does an automatic underscan on my LCD TV (connected via HDMI). So I reset this underscan to get rid of the black box around my desktop by issuing four commands in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc:
Code:
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tmds2i,positionX:0
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tmds2i,positionY:0
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tmds2i,sizeX:1920
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tmds2i,sizeY:1080
Obviously, xinitrc will not be called after doing a suspend2ram, but fglrx decided to get me back to underscan. So I tried to set up a hook:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
case $1 in
hibernate)
# Suspend to disk
[code]....
I get the exact same error messages, if I try to run the four aticonfig commands with "sudo -s" - however, it works, if I run them as "su".So finally coming to the question: Is a hook running with sudo privileges? Can I get it to run as "real" "su" ? Any other ideas (short of creating a hook that's logging me off, then on again?)

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 this evening. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8500GT video card with two monitors hooked up (one to the cards VGA, the other to the DVI). I installed Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu is working with both monitors fine.
The problem I am having is it chose the monitor plugged into VGA as the primary (uses that monitor for the toolbars) when I really want them to go on the monitor that is plugged into DVI. Is there anyway for me to switch which monitor Ubuntu treats as the primary?

I have a Radeon HD 5830, running 3 monitors on 10.10 64bit with the 10.6 video driver. The three monitors ( from left to right ) :
DFP1 : 1152x2048
DFP2 : 1920x1200
CRT1 : 1360x768
The problem I'm having is getting the middle monitor to be the primary one.
Running
xrandr --output DFP2 --primary
puts the panel on the middle screen but my docky and icons stay on the left screen. Flash videos also open up on the portrait left monitor which looks awful. Ideally I would like the icons on DFP1, docky on P2 and flash videos to open on P2. But I would definitely settle for everyone to be on the middle screen and drag it around as I please.

having trouble setting up a dual monitor from my Dell xps laptop using an HDMI port. It dual boots onto Ubuntu 10.04. The computer has a Nvidia GeForce GT 555M with Optimus graphics card I need to make sure I have not installed the restricted drivers. So I think what is happening right now is that the graphics are shown off the integrated graphics card. This is my output from <lspci | grep VGA>
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 0126 (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0dcd (rev a1)
The forum recommends to use this program called Bumblebee but I have had some issues with that in the past. Is there somehow I can setup my dual display while staying on Ubuntu 10.04 and not installing Bumblebee? I have researched into setting up dual display walkthroughs before but they all concentrate on nvidia or ATI configurations.

I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

I have the following scenario that doesn't seem to work normally. I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0
I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2.
echo $DISPLAY
<no output>
I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.
I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>
Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.

I am going to school for IT Security and will be taking my first Linux class this semester. I have dabbled a little bit in Linux before this but never really had the time to get to involved so I put it off untill now. Now I am forced . Anywho...I just installed Fedora11 (dual booting with Vista home basic) and the first thing that I am trying to tackle is install VMware. I have access to a bunch of Window OS's because of school and would like to create a 'virtual' version of windows for things like iTunes. This way, i have to force myself to use Linux for everything and I can install it on the whole PC. Until then, I am going to dual boot. When I was trying to install VMware, I tried to do it from the Terminal using sudo sh then the file name which is a .bundle file, I typed in the password and it said that my account was not in the 'sudowers' profile or something like that. I read on-line that you can modify who can sudo and who can't in the ect/sudoers file but if has an 'X' at the top right and I can't open it. It says 'Could not display "/etc/Sudoers". I tried to use visudo in the terminal and it says that permission is denied.
