I installed Debian Squeeze with Gnome today. I'm unable to change from the default icon theme. I can change themes, but the icon theme remains default.Things I've tried:
- I've made a new user account.
- .gtkrc-2.0 in my home is auto-generated, .gtkrc.mine does not exist.
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT include "/usr/share/themes/Darklooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" include "/home/haunted/.gtkrc.mine"
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
- I've tried installing a theme into my /home/.themes.
- I've reinstalled gnome-settings-daemon.
- Tried changing themes then doing a full reboot.
- Cursed it periodically.

from
Code: Select alldeb http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy-php56-zts all
deb-src http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy-php56-zts all
to
Code: Select alldeb http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy-php56 all
deb-src http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy-php56 all
And then
Code: Select allapt-get update
apt-get upgrade
But nothing has changed. What am I doing wrong?

I tried to change hostname through ssh.
Old hostname = server1
New hostname = server1.domain.local
I changed the hostname by editing the /etc/hostname file
Old:
/etc/hostname
server1
New:
/etc/hostname
server1.domain.local
Then I executed /etc/init.d/hostname.sh, and get as below, looks OK!
hostname -f
server1.domain.local
hostname
server1.domain.local
hostname -s
server1
The logs are still just showing server1.
Example:
tail -f /var/log/auth.log
Apr 15 13:30:01 server1 CRON[22783]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Apr 15 13:30:02 server1 CRON[22783]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root
Do I really have to reboot, or is this normal behaviour that it does not show the full hostname?

I have these installations:
1. Wheezy on SSD (/dev/sdb) in one single partition (50GB)
2. Squeeze on HDD (/de/sda) with /boot, /root and /home.
Both drives are ext4 and they share one single swap partition.
I normally run wheezy on ssd since it is much faster. But, I have to log into my /home in squeeze in order to access my data there.
Is there a way that I can change wheezy to use the /home in the squeeze (second hdd)?

I just installed Debian and on the desktop are a few icons that have hideous icons. I was learning to just deal with them, but then I made a launcher for firefox and it gave me this spring-with-a-platform icon that just crossed the line for me.......
How can I change the icon pictures so that they actually represent what they are? I want the firefox launcher to just be the normal earth-with-orange-fire-thing firefox icon.

I have a Debian Wheezy 7 installation. When I turn it on it boots to the log in screen normally. However when I type in my username/password and try to login the screen briefly turns off for about one second and returns to the log in screen. I cannot log in.
This started happening immediately after I changed the owner and permissions for the "/tmp" folder and all of its contained files/directories. This is the only change I made to the system before the problem began. Immediately after I made the change, I rebooted the system and that's when the problem began.

In this moment it seems to be 640x480 and it could be better if the resolution could be 800x600. I have tryed to modified /etc/grub/00_header
if [ "x${GRUB_GFXMODE}" = "x" ] ; then GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600 ; fi

I want to use Remastersys Backup, but their webpage [url] says that it only works with Grub-legacy, not with Grub-2 (Grub-pc).
What I currently have is Grub-2, and the question is can I safely switch from that to legacy, i.e., with a simple synaptic remove and install?
The Remastersys package actually wants to install, also in synaptic, the dummy package "grub"; so should I allow it to take care of the switch, or do I do it myself as above?
Using Debian Squeeze only, no multi-booting.

I have setup a VPS @ Strato with Linux Wheezy.Since I'am in the Netherlands I got a Dutch language package installed.I like to setup into englisch all the way.Via dpkg-reconfigure locales I have installed en_GB.UTF-8 UTF8 language packages and deïnstaled nl_NL.utf8
Generating locales (this might take a while)...
en_GB.UTF-8... done
Generation complete.
But a lot of the commands are still in Dutch like: h2458377:~# uitgelogd. And quite often I got:
-su: warning: setlocale: LC_ALL: cannot change locale (nl_NL.utf8)
How do I get ripped off this error?Just working with/on the command line

I have debian latest stable and have been using a geforce gfx card which has now failed.I have removed the gfx card and activated the on board gfx in bios and I can boot to the grub screen. The onboard gfx is on my i5 4600.After I select debian from grub I end up with a blank black screen and a small cursor in top left hand corner but I cannot type anything with this cursor. From this screen I can only ctrl+alt+del for reboot or physically turn off the pc.I think this is a driver issue but wouldnt debian just use a default gfx driver automatically in this situation so I would at least get to a console or desktop? If this is the case what is the process to enable the required driver? via rescue disk?Mobo is gigabyte GA z87 hd3 and im wondering if this might be something to do with uefi or similar?

I've been scouring the net and I'm sure it's something simple but here's my problem. I have a BeagleBone Black running Debian from a uSD card. I also have a 1TB WD My Passport external HD. If I have the external drive plugged in when I boot it is mounted under /media/My Passport it is formated NTFS since it was being used for windows. Being that I'm planning on eventually planning on making this a nas/owncloud device mounting at boot is fine but I would like to mount it under another directory. I've looked in /etc/rc.local and /etc/fstab and it does not mention that drive in either place and autofs is not installed.

Recently we have upgraded our hotel maintenance software, which uses databases and is running on Debian. We bought a HP ProLiant ML 110 G5 server for running the softwares. We experienced very slow speed on the network but after several tests, the result was that either the server or the software is the cause. We think that the software is the cause, but the provider of the software thinks it is the other way around. There is also HDD mirroring.
We have a same server except for memory. Our suggestion was that we move the two HDDs from the allegedly faulty server to the other one and than test the older server. But the provider of the software told us that this is not possible, since after moving the HDDs the mirroring might go bad and if the OS does not recognize the new hardware the OS could be damaged and than we will not be able to run the software. We were wondering whether this is a plausible scenario?

I've read quite a few threads on how to change the GCC version to 4.3 from 4.4 but when i do it tries to tell me that it cannot even compile the gcc version check or something similar. Also the kernel-source is 196.x.x even though the latest driver is 256.x.x so will compiling it make a difference since it's using an older version of the kernel source, i've checked in sid and apparently it's using the same package which is surprising. The main reason why i'm going to try to upgrade from 196.x.x is because that release has frequently and does frequently stay in the higher gpu clock for no reason and also runs ~10-20*C hotter than 256 does and for me that's the difference between 65*C max and 85*C max which is a very noticeable difference.

I have, as I have in the past, copy/pasted a partition using gparted to get a working OS to another place.
I have always done this in the past to a different drive. Never paid much attention to the UUID.
This time I did it on the same drive. The partitions have the same UUID. This is not a good thing.
The copied OS boots and mounts fine as I edited the fstab to go by /dev/sdxy (where x is the drive and y the partition). My grub uses a custom menu using symbolic menu entries so it goes by the partition definition instead of UUID too.
I would really like to change the UUID on that partition.
