Debian :: Rtorrent Through Schroot Not Starting On Boot?

Apr 15, 2010

I am running Lenny, but I wanted to use a newer version of rtorrent, so I am running it via schroot. I have an init.d script from the rtorrent website that would automatically start rtorrent on boot, but now I am running rtorrent through schroot, it doesn't work anymore.I believe it may be something in my rc.# folders. I seem to remember adding a command to end all schroot sessions when shutting down the ompur, and I was thinking that it might be interfering with rtorrent starting correctly.Any tips on how I troubleshoot this? Here's a file listing of my rc2.d folder:

Debian :: Boot Without Starting X

Jun 3, 2015

I just installed debian 8.0.0..I installed it without "desktop-environment" during tasksel, but instead installed it with "sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core" atferwards.I want x-win to be present but I do not want it to start during boot.

Adding "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text" to the grub config used to work but for this new debian it does not change anything. Yes, I did do update-grub2 after editing the grub file, and I also confirmed in /var/log/messages that "text" is present with the kernel command. "sudo update-rc.d gdm3 remove" also has no effect, what I do gnome starts at boot time.

Debian :: Sync Clock - NTPD Not Starting On Boot

Jul 19, 2011

I'm trying to sync my clock. I think I would like to do this by the "ntpd" daemon running. I think it should start up on boot, but it doesn't.

I have the following in my /var/log/syslog:
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpd[1780]: ntpd 4.2.6p2@1.2194-o Sun Oct 17 13:45:13 UTC 2010 (1)
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpd[1781]: proto: precision = 0.634 usec
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpd[1781]: unable to bind to wildcard address 0.0.0.0 - another process may be running - EXITING
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpdate[1194]: step time server 72.26.125.125 offset -0.505108 sec

Other posts say if ntpd and ntpdate run too close together, they cause one to think the other is locking a resource. It works to type "ntpdate pool.ntp.org" to manually update the clock. My Debian version is squeeze (6.0.2)

It works to start the ntpd daemon manually:
... sudo /etc/init.d/ntp start
... Starting NTP server: ntpd.

Programming :: Bootstrap Not Starting U-boot In The Normal Boot Sequence

Oct 5, 2010

I am facing a problem with my AT91SAM9260 customized board. Board is almost same as the evaluation kit.

I could download the binaries ( Bootstrap-v1.16, u-boot-1.3.4, linux kernel 2.6.20) successfully to the DATAFLASH/NANDFlash in my board by using atmel SAM-BA tool with usb/serialport/jlink.

Here I describe the problem.

When I power up the board, boot strap is not jumping to U-boot location, in the normal boot sequence and board stuck with bootstrap.

But when I disconnect/connect the JTAG USB cable ( provided with SAM-BA ICE) , it's jumping to u-boot location and booting the board properly. I'm getting the same error in NAND FLASH also.

I have tried one more test case.I copied bootstrap binary at the flash location, [location which is specified for u-boot binary] instead of U-boot.bin (location: 0x8400 in dataflash), I got continous bootstrap debug messages in my console. [ So can I conclude SDRAM doesn't have any problem? ]

Bootstrap code or U-boot code ?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Rtorrent Won't Start?

May 24, 2010

I know this thread rumours around for some time now and it is usually not a good idea to bump it to the head, but my problem is quite similar. I have set up the script, it is run and the screen starts. But rtorrent won't start. It starts only if I run the /etc/init.d/rtorrent start manually. The init script is from here, more or less the official version. Does anyone know why a app don't start with init.d? A big problem, of course, is that there are no logs to examine why it fails in the first place. It could be a simple dependency problem, but as it starts with prio 99, even this should be fine.

Server :: Get The XML RPC Interface On RTorrent?

Feb 19, 2010

I've been trying to get the XML RPC interface on rTorrent working for some time now, without success. I'm running Debian 5.0 'Lenny' (stable) i386 on a Intel Atom, and need to let an external application communicate with rTorrent via XML RPC.

I've hand compiled the XML RPC C (1.06) libraries and tried the default packaged version for Lenny, and tried almost all possible combinations of the libtorrent10/libtorrent11 libraries and the rtorrent 0.7.9 through to the latest 0.8.x release. As far as I can see the compilation of both the XML RPC libraries and libtorrent work flawlessly (using no special parameters for the 'configure' scripts). I've compiled rTorrent with the --with-xmlrpc-c syntax, which is also accepted, and it compiles flawlessly.

Code:
system:~# xmlrpc 127.0.0.1:5000 system.listMethods

CentOS 5 :: Rtorrent Simply Not Working?

May 3, 2009

i'm having hard times trying to get rtorrent working on two CentOS boxes (one is 5.2 and the other 5.3, both x86_64)

i'm using rtorrent RPMs provided from rpmforge

they install fine, starts fine ... but there's simply absolutely no traffic at all !!! I'm sure ISPs are not blocking torrent (they can be shapping, but blocking i'm pretty sure they arent). And when i say there's no traffic, i mean rtorrent cant even download the torrent file when i inform the [URL] from inside rtorrent. It stays there on 0% and there's no download.

if i download the file from the console, with wget for example, i can download it successfully.

i have already tcpdumped the machine and i can confirm rtorrent is not even generating any kind of traffic. NOTHING.

do anyone got rtorrent from rpmforge working fine on CentOS 5.2 and 5.3 x86_64 boxes ?

it should be simply .... at least it was on Fedora 8 and 9 that i used before start using CentOS ...

I've been using rTorrent for a good two years now, and it's been running smoothly until about 6 months ago when random crashes and freezes would occur, between once per day and once per week. (I think it freezes if I run in screen, and crashes if I run it directly.) I've updated both rtorrent and libtorrent, updated cURL, and searched the internet near and far for a solution. I finally got this output (pastebin) after a crash today. I'm not sure how far up it goes, mainly because I'm not sure how I can scroll up the terminal window, and syslog doesn't seem to be of any help. Bottom line, I have no idea what rtorrent/libtorrent are doing, and random crashes are becoming very frustrating. For what it's worth I have a very large library (2000+) of shared files. Using version 9.04

Software :: Running Rtorrent On A Remote Server?

Jan 31, 2010

I am running rtorrent on a remote server mainly for seeding torrents. However, I am also using it to download new media.

I wish to share the downloaded torrent media on the web server. This works great for torrents that have finished downloading, however, for torrents that are in the process of downloading, such as large multi-GiB torrents which have slow seeders or no seeders, this creates an issue.

The problem is that I have set the rtorrent default download directory to be visible on the web server. Which is what I want, so that people can get the downloaded media via a web server. Then, when I drop a new torrent into the directory that rtorrent watches, it will start downloading the media to the web servers visible directory. When it finishes the download, then it works the way that I want. So that the media is available both as a web download and also as a torrent download.

The issue is that when a download is in progress, media that is available on the web server is incomplete.

I can manually close a torrent and manually move the media to a different location, then manually tell rtorrent to use the new location for the torrrent (^o)... but that is doing it manually... and if I need to do this with a large number of torrents, it takes a very long time.

I want to automate that so that I don't have to mess with it at all. A lot of other software such as utorrent and such can do this automatically, but it seems that feature is missing from rtorrent.

rtorrent does offer a scripting function in it's config file that can start a script on completion of a torrent file, however, I have not been able to figure out how to automaticaly stop a torrent seed, move the torrent media to a different location and then tell rtorrent the file is in the new location, then start up the torrent again. Moving a torrents associated media to a new location also initiates a hash check when the torrent is started.

I am not going to use different software. Since rtorrent is shell based and uses curses, it doesn't require GUI features. That saves something like 150 megs of memory for disk caching, etc. rtorrent kicks MUCH ass for this purpose and it uses a tiny amount of system resources.

I use screen with rtorrent so that it will run without having to be logged into the system.

I also need to limit the bandwidth on Apache so that people can download with the web if they absolutely must, but I would prefer that they used the torrent files. So, I would like to slow down their downloads quite a bit so that more bandwidth is used with rtorrent.

As with most Linux issues, there is more than one way to do something. The problem is, I can't even figure out one of those ways right now.

Ubuntu :: RTorrent, Move Complete Downloads To Custom Dir?

For example.

Downloaded. i movie clip and rtorrent moves it to /media/store/eps/ but i want it to automatically move it to check the files name and put it in the right subdir.

If the file is called "Series-1" i want rtorrent to put it the subdir "Series-1" in /media/store/eps/ but if it's called "Series-2" i want rtorrent to move it to the subdir "Series-2"

All this is because my XBMC setup wont add the files to the library if i dont add as a "one-series-only"-folder.

Ubuntu Networking :: Rtorrent Killing Network Whether Downloading Or Not

Jul 8, 2011

I use Ubuntu 10.04 server as a base for my media center, with rtorrent as my download program. I've had to move into a smaller place where I don't have direct control over the network, and where we have a vanishingly poor DSL connection. When I start up rtorrent, every computer on the network starts having dramatic slowdowns of internet speed, even when both my downloads and uploads are throttled to 1KBps, which is as low as rtorrent will go. Unfortunately, as I said, I don't have direct access to the router. The IT guy says my media center "is sending requests to all the computers on the network like crazy". How he knows that, I don't know, nor do I know exactly what he means.

But it is only when I have rtorrent running, even when it's only running 1k each way. It was my intention to test whether or not running utorrent on my Windows box had the same effect, but it's telling me "an attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions" on all trackers, which I've also been unable to resolve. It may or may not be symptomatic of the same issue, but the UI of rtorrent is painfully slow. As in, I push the down arrow, go make myself a sandwich and watch some telly, and maybe when I'm done it's selected the next torrent. I used to use Transmission, but it used more resources and interfered with watching shows.

Software :: Rtorrent 0.7.9 On Fedora - Caught Segmentation Fault

Due certain torrent sites I'm visiting I was forced to upgrade to rtorrent 0.7.9, which isn't avaiable through F8 repositories so I had to compile it myself. It went fairly smooth and I've been using it now for couple of months with no problems whatsoever.

However, recently, it started crashing on me, at the start, throwing out following message:

Caught Segmentation fault, dumping stack:
Stack dump not enabled.

I have no clue what this is. I can assure you that I haven't altered anything on my system after I compiled the client.

Eventually, I am able to start the program, after an x-amount of tries.

I even tried to delete my session directory once. It seems to have helped at one occasion, but several days later, I was in the same trouble.
