Debian Installation :: Grub Error 18 With Lenny While Booting

May 7, 2010

I recently did a single boot install of Lenny-xfce on a Compaq Armada laptop. There were no errors and grub indeed found that Lenny was the only OS on the hard drive and installed itself on the MBR. My problem is that I'm getting an error 18 when booting the freshly installed system from hard disk. I booted into rescue mode and started a shell to take a look around. There are files on the drive and /etc/grub exists. device.map shows dev(0,0) as being mapped to /dev/hda. A search on the forum for "grub error 18" came up with nothing.

Debian Installation :: Booting From USB HDD - Error 17: Cannot Mount Selected Partition

May 10, 2010

I have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Debian Installation :: Booting Debian With Ubuntu/XP Triple / Warning Bootdevice May Be Renamed?

Mar 6, 2010

I had (and still do) a working dual-boot XP/Karmic (GRUB version 1.97 beta4). I shrank the Ubuntu partition and set up partitions and installed Debian 5.04. When I got to the point of installing GRUB, I told Debian to install grub to MBR. On rebooting, Ubuntu was not an option on the NEW (looked different) grub menu.Maybe it was GRUB2? Could boot to either XP or Debian though.

Thought easiest thing was to reinstall Ubuntu since it seems to "see" other OS's more reliably. So I did, and installed GRUB again during its install to MBR. Then, all three were in the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4 again), but when tried booting to Debian, got an error (forget the wording), but think it was because the partitions got renumbered when installing Ubuntu.

SO, reinstalled Debian, reformatting the partitions but not deleting them first so the numbering stayed the same. When got to the part for installing GRUB, I told it to skip (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..."), hoping now the current GRUB would work.

Now, all three were on the GRUB menu, but when I tried to boot Debian, I got "no such device" and a list of numbers/letters after it. And "press any key to continue", which takes you back to the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4, by the way).

O.K., did sudo update-grub in ubuntu and rebooted. Now, Debian 5.04 shows as last entry in GRUB, and choosing it starts a boot, which hangs at "Begin: Waiting for root file system....".

Waiting long enough at the "Waiting for root file system..." hang results in a series of notifications:

WARNING bootdevice may be renamed. Try root=dev/hda3
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= (did the sytem wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sda3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

In Gparted, the partition with Debian root is hdc3, although on the GRUB menu it's listed as /dev/sda3. However, in Gparted the Windows partition is hdc1 and on GRUB it's /dev/sda1, and it boots fine.....

Is my Debian install just borked? Did telling it to skip installing a bootloader (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..." ruin it?

If skipping the bootloader install did ruin it, how do you install Debian without borking your current GRUB? That's what happened the first time.

Fedora Installation :: UUID Error While Booting

Apr 3, 2009

I have 2 CPUs Which are Intel and AMD based. I used F9 before and didnt have any issues while I removed the hdd that I'd installed F9 on INTEL based and then put my hdd on my AMD based cpu. Well it booted and ran perfectly no issues came up.And then I've done the upgrade to F10 (clean install on INTEL). I do the same case above. But I got error msgs it said that the UUID cannot be found (I was using label on F9 fstab and worked fine).

I put back my hdd to intel based cpu and then try to edit my fstab and menu.lst (change UUID to LABEL). WOW I thought by changing UUID from fstab and menu.lst would resolve my problem but it doesnt solve anything. My devices (sda1/2/3, /boot, and /home) cannot be reconized.Well do you guys know how to change UUID to LABEL? and what exactly my problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: I / O Error When Booting Laptop From USB

Nov 26, 2010

I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 from my USB SanDisk Cruzer to my ThinkPad x60s. I configured the USB exactly as directed by the Ubuntu website's instructions, and booted the laptop from the USB. Things went well until the installer informed me that the installation was complete and I needed to restart the computer. I clicked on the button to do so, but when the computer restarted it displayed a list of error strings like thus:

end_request: I/O error, dev sbd, sector xxxxxxxx
end_request: I/O error, dev sbd, sector xxxxxxx2
end_request: I/O error, dev sbd, sector xxxxxxx3

Restarting the computer again with the USB brought up the regular installation menu. Restarting without it brought up a blank black screen with a blinking cursor. I attempted to execute the entire process again (format and reinstall) with the exact same results. How can I finish the installation and access the operating system?

Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad x60s

I checked the CD for defects, and even tried re-downloading/burning to a new disc, but got the same problem. I tried booting in to the LIVE session then installing from the desktop but I still got the same error. I have had 9.10 running on here fine, and after running a Kubuntu 9.10 disc I had to hand to check it would work, that installed fine (hence the auto-partitions you will see in my info dump below). Here is some information about my system, let me know if I've missed anything. I've also included a copy of the syslog below.

Fedora Installation :: Error: Idle With IF=0" But Everything Ended Up Booting Normal

Jun 29, 2010

I just read through the Lifehacker article on how to create a Linux boot from USB and thought it would be a good idea for when I want to use a light system on my netbook. Anyways, I encountered some problems when trying to boot the first time on my netbook. I got an error before it was loading up "Error: idle with IF=0" but everything ended up booting normal; however, I couldn't find my wireless connection.

Well, then I decided to boot up my other laptop with it and then was going to install the OS to my external hard drive; however, it never did find any storage devices (after I let it sit and load for about 10 minutes). My last question/issue is wondering if I can install it to my main hard drive and boot either WIndows XP/7 or Fedora instead of just one or the other. FYI, I was running the boot from a 4gb USB drive.

99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99
99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99

It would just do two or three rows of 99's and then it would hang. Does anyone know what is happening? Right now I have Windows on this computer and I can't even boot into that. The data for Windows is safe but I just can't boot into Windows for some reason.n erasing sda6, did I accidentally erase LILO too (Vector was the first option on LILO)?If someone has posted this problem in the past

Debian Installation :: Booting Jessie 64b With UEFI From USB

Sep 30, 2014

I have this new computer (MSI Ge70 2PE Apache Pro) that came with Windows 8 and UEFI. I freed space to make a partition to install Debian testing 64bits on the same HD where Windows is. I had no problem making the partition but after that I tried making a bootable usb to install Debian using the dd command and it didn't work. So I tried with an install dvd and even when I changed the boot order in the bios it didn't work.

After reading some more I realized that there could be a problem trying to boot a normal installation dvd with UEFi so I disabled Secure Boot and then switched the boot mode on my Bios to UEFI with CSM. Again it didn't work and it booted directly into Windows. So I switched the boot mode to Legacy. This time Windows didn't boot directly but I get a "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" message on a black screen.

I now realize that I need to install a UEFI "version" of Debian along the UEFI version of Windows 8. I guess that's why it didn't work with the Legacy boot mode. URL...The installer does not provide a convenient way to install an UEFI boot loader, so you are going to install a regular BIOS boot loader at first, and switch to UEFI later.

Use the expert mode and format your hard drive with a GUID Partition Table (GPT). Create a small partition (1 MiB would be far enough), type it as a BIOS Boot Partition (this is the untitled flag above the “bootable” one in Partman), do not format it and do not mount it: this will be needed for BIOS booting. Create another small partition (same kind of size), type it as an EFI System Partition (this is the“bootable” flag), format it as FAT and mount it on /boot/efi: this will be needed for UEFI booting.

Debian Installation :: Creating And Booting Jessie Installer

Aug 15, 2015

I am installing Jessie to a dual-boot Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop currently booting Windows XP + Ubuntu 9.04. I downloaded the small installation image:

Code:
Select all//cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/8.1.0/i386/iso-cd/debian-8.1.0-i386-netinst.iso
and created a live dvd using growisofs.

The Jessie install documentation says: "If you downloaded an iso image, check that the md5sum of that image matches the one listed for the image in the MD5SUMS file that should be present in the same location as where you downloaded the image from." For the downloaded image this produced the result

Code:
Select all~$ md5sum debian-8.1.0-i386-netinst.iso
095a83b715e1b74b6d30b2259275f4af  debian-8.1.0-i386-netinst.iso

There is no MD5SUMS file in the download directory. There is an md5sum.txt file included in the iso image: this lists the md5sum of every file in the image, but not that of the image itself. The check for the burned dvd was successful :

Code:
Select all~$ dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s debian-8.1.0-i386-netinst.iso` | md5sum
645120+0 records in
645120+0 records out
330301440 bytes (330 MB) copied, 1.28047 s, 258 MB/s
095a83b715e1b74b6d30b2259275f4af  -

Is this a documentation error ? I next booted the laptop from the live installer dvd. After generating a number of messages, it stopped displaying a message along the lines of: "Invalid video mode - press Enter to select a mode".

I assumed it would wait for me but it soon rushed on, producing screeds of segmentation fault error messages, eventually slowing down to a rythmic display of:

Code: Select all*** Error in Xorg:free() invalid pointer: 0xb7101ce3

***Surely it should have waited for me to press Enter?

Debian Installation :: Creating A Live USB (Not Booting On EeePc)

Apr 8, 2016

I'm trying to rebuild an old laptop, EeePc 1001PX and I've issues to boot on the usb on it.

I've followed [URL] .... and the only way I manage to make a usb key that will boot is by hd-media/boot.img.gz:

Code: Select all# zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdb
# mount /dev/sdb /media/usb
# cp /tmp/debian-8.4.0-i386-CD-1.iso /media/usb
# sync
# umount /media/usb

I managed to install Debian using this technique to build the usb key.

However I'm having an issue on the laptop with the wifi card (Atheros AR9285) and after a night trying to make it work I'd like to check if I'd would have the same issue Ubuntu.

So I've been desperately trying to make a bootable usb key with Ubuntu on it.... It boots on my laptop but not on this EeePc...

I've tried:

Code: Select allcat /tmp/myimage.iso > /dev/sdb
Code: Select alldd if=/tmp/myimage.iso of=/dev/sdb && sync

I've installed multibootusb [URL] ... and liveUsb install [URL] .... which doesn't work on my EeePc...

Wh only this technique of using is hd-media/boot.img.gz is working on that laptop?

I'd like to try to install Ubuntu via grub using a partition [URL] .... but I need to create 2 partitions and so to boot on a external system.

I've downloaded gparted-live-0.25.0-3-i686.iso but like with Ubuntu I don't manage to create a bootable USB key for this crappy EeePc.
