Ubuntu :: Charging Sony Ericsson Phone Via Usb?
Feb 15, 2010I didn't know that charging via usb for my sony ericsson mobile, w880i actually needs the SE PC Suite to be installed, cos, I used to charge it via usb cable, as mentioned, on my workstation, which is window based, it's kinda insignificant to me that the software has to be installed first.
However, I'm currently on the move, with my newly installed "netbook", I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my twinhead efio 121A (which is good, no compatibility issue) and now, I just figured that, SE PC Suite does not have any linux version, but my mobile is already out of battery, and I desperately need to charge it,
I did run a lsusb, it doesn't seem to detect the phone, neither as usb storage, or as a phone, cos, I saw other people lsusb output, it's an item with "sony ericsson", but my output does not have such item. However, when I plug in the usb cable, it did prompt to ask me to choose between "file transfer" or "phone mode".

Oct 17, 2010I recently installed the new Ubuntu 10.10. My Sony Ericsson M600i produces a window to enter a PIN to connect to the internet. The window reads 'The mobile broadband device Sony ericsson M600i requires a SIM Unlock PIN before connecting to the internet.' I entered my SIM PIN and the network disconnected, I'm not sure what to do now. The phone works with no PIN request on Ubuntu 8.10.

Jan 22, 2011On my Sony Vaio VPCF12M1E I have a small but irritating problem: Since yesterday the numeric pad on my keyboard doesn't work anymore. I can use the numbers at the top, but not on my numpad. This happened out of nowhere when I was just setting up an access point. No idea what I did wrong, cause I only configured a static IP Reboot, and numpad was gone. I tried restarting the laptop, I tried disabling and enabling Numlock over and over again. Nothing works.

Jul 26, 2011The function keys regarding the brightness do not work on my laptop. I am using Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx LTS 32 bit version. I've looked on the internet for help regarding my laptop but I cant find any solutions regarding the brightness function keys for my laptop Sony Vaio VGN NR21S. The graphics card in my laptop is NVidia Geforce 8400M GT.
I've tried writing brightness-up and brightness down scripts along with a bash script but even those don't work. I tried Gnome Power Manager but that didn't solve any issues. The wireless and sound functions work.
Are there any solutions available for this particular laptop model?

Nov 29, 2010Got this new Sony from BB on black friday. I also have the pcg-7184l that works fine and the specs looked very similar. Everything seems to work but the touch pad. I am running able to use a USB mouse with no issue. A search online has not been fruitful so now to ask the community. I am willing to start from basics because I am either overlooked something or missing something. On hardware info all I show is the Sony Jogdial and the USB mouse under mouse. That is making me think that HAL is not even detecting the hardware. According to Sony the windows driver is ALPS so for some reason this one is not being detected by the kernel. I had done a clean install and then updates but the touchpad still does not seem to work in Linux but it was working under Windows7 (has since been removed but I do have an image if I have to restore back to windows.

At home when I entered the pass for the internet it would try connecting and five minutes later be back asking for the pass again. It won't connect at my house or my grandparent's house. They both have a protected internet but my friend does also and I was able to connect to his.

Finally I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 (mainly following the advice on [URL] and using his kernel). Every thing is working fine including sound (still a few minor problems with backlight and Fn F5/F6). But I still desperately try to get the internal microphone running.
Ubuntu Installation :: External Monitor Not Working After 10.10 Upgrade Sony Vaio VGN-TZ398U
Oct 19, 2010I just upgraded to 10.10 64-bit from 10.04 64-bit and my external monitor is no longer working properly. Using the "Monitors" function in preferences, it does recognize my monitor and does in fact activate it, but the total available screen real estate is only increased by 10-15 pixels (i.e. my mouse moves to the external monitor, but it stops after 10-15 pixels). Thinking that something went wrong with the upgrade, I backed up my data and did a clean install from CD after format and the problem is the same.

Jan 12, 2010I tried to get my 3G connection up with my Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 and its built-in Ericsson 3G modem. Well, as I found out after some time of debugging, it didn't work because my network provider only accepts PAP authentication, and regardless of the configuration within NetworkManager, the ModemManager always tried CHAP authentication.
I guess this is because the dialog of selecting PAP, CHAP etc. seems only be used for pppd, but not for the internal setup of the 3G modem.
For the Ericsson (and possibly other modems), the authentication for a packet connection is done with the AT*EIAAUW command, which is hard-coded in modem-manager to use the defaults for authentication.
I patched my ModemManager to allow only PAP in the AT*EIAAUW command, and this worked out perfectly. You can find the patch below. Beware that this is certainly not something that should be included by default, only given here for reference.
Frankly, I don't know who to address to talk about a possibility to get this feature (authentication method selection) in the ModemManager in a clean fashion. I'd be happy to provide some assistance to improve the ModemManager. If someone could provide me with a hint who to talk to or what to do next.
For your reference: the "00010" in this case references a bit-field of 5 positions, whereas the bits mark the authentication algorithms (MS-CHAPv2, MS-CHAP, CHAP, PAP, NONE) respectively. So, 00010 enables PAP and disables the rest.

Debian Configuration :: 5.04 - Wireless Drivers For Sony Vaio?
Apr 17, 2010I used to have an Ubuntu-Windows partition, but (what do you know?) Windows Crashed, and wouldn't boot anymore. So I reinstalled Windows, deleting my Ubuntu partition. Instead of reinstalling Ubuntu afterwards, I decided to give Debian a try. So here I am. I can't find drivers for my wireless network however, and it's quite annoying to have to plug in the Wired Connection with which I am writing this.

Aug 31, 2010Ethernet, bluetooth and video work fine. I also managed to get the wireless card working by installling "firmware-iwlwifi". I can make the touchpad work sending to the kernel the parameter "i8042.nopnp" at boot time(grub), but then I get the computer frozen for a second every five second so I decided to use a usb mouse, until I get another fix.As you can see I can use the laptop except that...I have no sound at all, I can only hear something using headphones.I've been searching the web but the only thing I found is a fix in ubuntu using some kernel-modules from backports repository, but can't install them on debian.

Jun 9, 2010I've been trying to install Ubuntu 64bit on Sony Vaio CW and the Screen is 14 inch when I boot from CD it seems to work normal but after i select "Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu" then the screen goes black like nothing happening but the CD runs for while then stop. Again I reboot to try again this time I press F6 then select "nomodeset" and it boots fine I was happy though, after installation success when I boot again WTF it goes black again and then I reboot and press "E" during the options that showing to select OS then I remove "Quit Splash".
I guess then I add "nomodeset" and control+X to boot, it works fine. So when I log in and of course I activate the Nvidia Graphic Driver then I reboot and WTF again the screen was out sync or something like the the screen didn't show properly. The Application menu normally is on the upper left of the screen but this time it was on the center of screen and the Shut down button came to the left side and i have to move the mouse cursor to the right and then it would appear on the left just like the resolution is to big for the screen.

Jan 6, 2010My Sony DV cam is about 6 years old so not really new technology but F12 will not detect the cam over firewire. When I turn on the cam I do not see anything in F12 (although I do not know where I would see the camera). When I run KDEnlive and hit connect on firewire it does not detect the camera.
I am dual booting with Win7 and the camera is detected there so I know my card, cable and connection are good.

Ubuntu :: Sony DVD RW - No Such Thing As Blank Disc?
Jan 3, 2010I'm running ubuntu 9.10 and I'm having difficulty with my Sony DRU-540a & burning CDs. No matter what, every disc I put in is unwritable. In Brassaro it says:
There is No Recordable Disc Inserted
So I tried Nero & that also said there was no recordable disc. I know these discs are blank, I just bought them yesterday. They're the same type of disc I used before switching permanently to ubuntu. When trying to play an audio cd with VLC I get the following error:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.
I installed ubuntu with this drive, why can't ubuntu read it?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: 9.1 Video With Sony KDL-40V5100?
Jan 13, 2010I just bought a new TV and I'm trying to use my ubuntu box as a media server. I've included my specs below. Ubuntu recognizes the TV fine and the resolution is automatically set to 1920x1080 according to the display prefs which is native to the TV. I can see the desktop but it extends beyond the borders of my TV, which makes me think that somehow the resolution isn't set properly. I can't see my top or bottom task bar at all
Furthermore, the image is quite messed up. It's hard to explain, but text doesn't appear properly, nor do any icons etc on the desktop, they're somewhat pixellated. What's even more confusing is that movies themselves seem to play fine. I've downloaded some 720p mkv's and they play great, so it's just the desktop itself that is messed. I've installed the NVidia driver manually from their site and it's the latest 173.14.22.

Ubuntu :: Sony Vaio VGN / Screen Is Too Bright
May 2, 2010I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ340E. I installed Ubuntu about 6 months ago and had a problem-free time with it. I then got busy with other stuff (house work, etc.) and hadn't worked on Ubuntu for about a month. Now I switch on my Vaio with Ubuntu and I find the screen is just too bright.Since 10.04 was just coming up, I thought this would be fixed when I update. I updated, but the screen is still too bright.
I searched the forum for answers and found only some pretty old threads which were about the Fn key combos (which, obviously, doesn't work), spicctrl, etc.So I followed the instructions here. I did just what Step 1: Checking for Module says, but Terminal just doesn't give any output.
