Debian Hardware :: Booting From Esata Drive Over Expresscard

Jan 1, 2015

I want to know if it is possible to boot Debian from an external disk connected to an esata port which is plugged in as an expresscard.

A laptop I run Linux Mint on has an expresscard adapter which I plan purchase an esata card for. This would provide 2 esata ports.

I will have another harddrive with Debian installed.
I will then use an external enclosure to connect the Debian drive to the esata port.
I would then add a custom grub entry to point to the drive connected via esata over the expresscard adapter.

The expresscard requires drivers : [URL] ....

Does the environment of the initial grub screen have the necessary drivers to boot from the drive attached over the esata? Is there a way to load them?

Another solution mentions using kexec (first comment under question) : [URL] ....

This seems to require the drivers having been loaded too.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 Does Not Recognize ESATA Drive

Jul 31, 2010

I have a working installation of OpenSuse 11.2 on a 300GB eSATA drive, /dev/sdb. Note: /dev/sdb is actually an IDE drive with an eSata adapter since my mother board only has one IDE ribbon input that I use for /dev/sda and the DVDRW drive.I have a 200GB IDE drive, /dev/sda that I use as a data drive. Both drives are accessible to 11.2 and in use.I installed OpenSuse 11.3 on /dev/sda in partition sda1. The same results occur with 32 bit and 64 bit distribution. I have grub for 11.3 on the the sda1 partition and chainload to it from 11.2 grub.

The installed 11.3 system will not recognize the second drive /dev/sdb or any of its partitions. It does not show up on /var/log/messages -- it does not appear to exist.I believe this problem is with 11.3 because 11.2 recognizes both disks. Perhaps it is support of eSATA drives or the IDE to eSATA adapter that has regressed?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Does Not Recognize ESATA Drive

Jul 30, 2010

I have a working installation of OpenSuse 11.2 on a 300GB eSATA drive, /dev/sdb. I have a 200GB IDE drive, /dev/sda that I use as a data drive. Both drives are accessible to 11.2 and in use.

/Dev/sdb is actually an IDE drive with an eSata adapter since my mother board only has one IDE ribbon input that I use for /dev/sda and the DVDRW drive.

I chose to install OpenSuse 11.3 on /dev/sda in partition sda1. I've installed 32 bit and 64 bit with the same result. I put grub on the the sda1 partition and chainload to it from 11.2 grub. I'm cautious because OpenSuse can be troublesome during installation.

PROBLEM: The installed system will not recognize the second drive /dev/sdb or any of its partitions. It does not show up on /var/log/messages -- it does not exist!

I believe this problem is with 11.3 because 11.2 recognizes both disks. Perhaps support of eSATA drives.

Fedora Installation :: FC10 On ESATA Drive Won't Start?

Mar 5, 2009

I am new to Fedora 10 and encountered the following problem. I installed FC10 on an external eSATA hard drive (sdb) on my laptop which already has some other Linux distros on sda. I used a DVD that came with the Fedora 10 Bible, so I can assume that the DVD had no problems. The installation went OK and I got no error messages. I added the following lines to the menu.lst file of the distro that I use to boot all my distros.

title Fedora 10
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/sdb2 rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686.img

When I boot Fedora, the blue bar at the bottom of the screen goes half-way, then gives me the error message: "mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' "

Fedora Installation :: Changing To Boot Off ESATA Drive

Mar 17, 2009

This machine has two internal HDDs which are dedicated to Vista (ergh). For various reasons, I elected to use an external drive for the installation of Linux. When I installed Fedora, I didn't have an eSATA cable, so I installed it via USB. if I change the boot device so it boots off the USB drive, the machine apparently remaps the drive to BIOS drive 0. However, when Linux boots, it'll still be considered sdc. So far so good. However, when I plug in the eSATA cable and try to boot Linux that way, the machine will boot off the internal sda because the only available option is "Internal Hard Drive." (And yes, the eSATA is working properly.)

I obviously need to install GRUB on the first drive, and it will then let me choose between Vista and Linux. I've done this kind of thing before on other machines and haven't had to much of a problem. However, running 'grub-install /dev/sda' resulted simply in blowing away my Vista boot loader, and a Grub installation that would hang at a black screen. Which of course then resulted in a plethora of pain trying to fix it with Microsoft's deliberately pathetic engineering. What did I do wrong there? And incidentally, the external hard drive isn't always going to be hooked up, so I don't want to be dependent on it to get into Vista.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install To An ESATA External Drive?

Mar 19, 2010

If I wanted to install Ubuntu to an external eSATA drive, how would I do that and not screw up the GRUB install on my primary internal drive? I'm guessing I would want to tell that eSATA installation to install its GRUB to the first partition on that drive rather than on my primary internal, but then.... how would I get there from the GRUB on my primary drive?I guess my problem is that the eSATA drive is not always powered up, and I'm not sure what GRUB (on the primary internal drive) would do if there was an entry pointing to a drive that wasn't there (because it's not turned on)

Debian :: Booting From Another Drive - Blinking Cursor At The Top Of The Screen

May 17, 2011

I have a machine with Squeeze that currently boots from an USB thumb drive (that was the only drive on that box, referenced as SDA in /dev... Yep, no optical drive or HDD). I have installed an SSD on that machine. It is referenced a SDA, and the thumb drive has been nudged to SDB. I'd like to boot from the SSD and ditch the thumb.

I've partitioned and formatted the new Disk (ext4), created a swap file (to keep things simple, no swap partition), and used rsync -Sax / /media/USB0/ to clone the content of the root FS. I've edited the fstab file of the SSD to match the config (uuid of the drive, ext4 FS, swap file) then use grub-mkconfig -o /media/USB0/boot/grub/grub.cfg (I apt-get installed grub 2)

I've set the SSD as first boot device in the BIOS. Now when I boot from the SSD, all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen (the thumb drive still boots fine). I guess I missed something .

I've been struggling with this for about 2 hours now (not the grub issue, the whole mess). I've tried googling this last problem, then searched this forum with no luck (I usually find stuff about people who want to boot from a drive other than the first one and must daisy-chain grub).

Bootloaders (and low level linux stuff) are new to me. I'm afraid to botch the bootloader of the thumb drive (grub 1.9x), and to be locked out of the machine.

Debian Multimedia :: ESATA + Thunar: You Do Not Have Privileges To Mount <volume>

May 16, 2011

how to get thunar with xfce 4.6 to mount external hard drives. Thunar with xfce 4.8 uses udisk, and all external and internal hard disks show up in the sidebar. With thunar in debian squeeze, though, no internal or external hard drives show up.

I can live without internal hard drives showing up, but I'd like to be able to mount my eSATA drive automatically. So far I've been completely unsuccessful in getting an entry to show up in thunar (like when a usb flash disk or cd is inserted), so I've added an entry to fstab:

LABEL=LIBRARY   /home/library   ext4   noauto, defaults, users And that doesn't seem to do anything. With and without the fstab line, I get a popup saying something like "Unable to mount volume "LIBRARY". You do not have priviliges to mount LIBRARY."

Everything else seems to mount fine. It's just that thunar/hal/whatever thinks that my eSATA drive is an "internal" hard drive and so doesn't treat it as removable.ALL of my drives, internal and eSATA, show up in the gtk "places" menu that is used in file-roller, iceweasel, etc. If I could find a way to get thunar to do this (like it can wtih xfce 4.8 and udisks) that would be GREAT.

EDIT: I also wanted to add that they show up in pcmanfm, but it also tells me "Not authorized" when I try to mount them.

General :: New Install Of Debian Of PPC G4 Not Booting With Repeated Message - Drive Not Ready

Mar 17, 2010

I just installed Debian onto a PowerPC G4 Tower with two hard drives. I left OS X on one of the drives and reformatted and installed Debian on the other, using the installer from the 60Mb ISO from the Debian website.

The installation had no issues and it starts yaboot and Debian no problem.

After about 2 minutes of the booting up process, it starts to output this, every five seconds:

While this happens, other things still continue load and it outputs occasional messages and even gets to "Debian Login:" where if you type really quickly and hit enter, it takes it and prompts for "Password:" right after the next round of the above messages.

I have not been able to completely log in yet.

I can start up into the shell as root with "Linux single" with no problems.

I think this might have something to do with the second Mac OS Formatted Hard drive. I have considered unplugging that drive and testing it that way, but I am looking for a solution to turn off whatever script is running that every five seconds and failing, regardless of what it is trying to do.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Bootable Installs: USB, SD, ExpressCard?

Jan 31, 2010

I have searched for a few days now and it seems this forum is the most active when it comes to linux questions so here goes. I have a MacbookPro5,1 and have been looking into various ways of running a linux distro in non-legacy mode, aka through EFI. I was thinking Fedora 12 (gasp) because it supports EFI booting on MBR formatted drives BUT not on a GUID drive (correct me if im wrong). The biggest reason I want to use EFI is because I want to use the 9400m instead of the 9600 card which apparently can be accomplished by entering the correct PCI ID into the xorg.conf file. - I'd like to avoid using the internal drive (running 10.6.2) but am open to it if no other options exist I need to be able to boot via EFI (and able to select it by holding Option at boot)

Variables:
- USB and SDHC cards my AFT PROExpress-7 card reader are bootable via EFI. I understand that these types of flash memory (SD especially) were not designed to run operating systems and the amount of read/writes could kill the drive off quickly if configured wrong. I am unsure of whether or not the ExpressCard/34 slot can boot off an ExpressCard SSD. I have been looking at the MyDigitalSSD 32GB card because it is much faster than the older versions of ExpressCard ssd's and is relatively cheap. Can anyone comment on this or other ExpressCard SSD's?

NOTE:
- I know about rEFIt but I don't think it helps me in this case (booting XP yes, but if i want to boot linux EFI i don't think so) As mentioned above, I am unsure of what are the requirements for booting a linux distro via EFI when it comes to type of partitioning scheme and what bootloader to install (grub2 or elilo) for a Macbook Pro I'm open to any/all suggestions and will try to document everything I do to update the sparse Wiki's when it comes to this topic.

Debian Installation :: Installing Debian On The Second Drive Without Messing With The Windows Drive?

Mar 21, 2011

I was wondering. Up till now whenever I installed Linux I've either dual booted with Windows off 1 HDD, or installed straight Linux by itself. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?

I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From CF Drive?

I have a micro-atx box with a CF reader that pretends it's an IDE HDD. You can boot off this thing and this is intended to be a "diskless" system. The vendor claims only 17 watts when at rest.My plan is that this will be a printer & backup server but the backup drive will be a USB drive that will only be turned on when needed so I want the box run without a HDD if possible.

My concern is the limited write cycle life of FLASH drives. I bought the best quality I could but I still want to preserve it as long as possible.I formatted it as ext2, for example, to stop the journeling writes of ext3 or ext4.Has anyone created a check list of configuration settings that will give the flash the longest life possible.

Ubuntu Installation :: Not Booting With 2nd Drive ?

Dec 20, 2010

I have been having trouble with my latest LinuxMCE core server (based on Kubuntu 8.10). It will load the OS with no problems on the IDE drive, unless I have another, or multiple, hard drive installed. It doesn't matter if I loaded onto the IDE or SATA drives, it gives me the "ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid....does not exist. Dropping to shell." I thought it might be the loader, as just to get it into 'live' mode I need to enter 'pci=nomsi'. I tried to load Fedora (to try AMAHI), but it just sent me into a grub loop. If I try to have the second disk installed while running the install, it gets frozen at the busybox. The whole reason for going to this combo of system and OS was to be able to have multiple pci/e cards for security, TV tuning, etc, and have a minimum of 8TB onboard which can stay on 24/7/365. 120 gig just won't cut it!

Basic system:
XFX 750a motherboard, nvidia 8200 graphics, onboard sound LAN sata raid, etc
AMD BE-2300 DualCore @1900mhz
Trendnet teg-pcitxr Gig LAN card (need two LAN for MCE)
Seagate st332000542as hard drive (unformatted, plan to use as storage)
WD1200 PATA drive/ WD1200 7200rpm laptop SATA that I'm trying to use as / (one at a time!)
Samsung external DVD to load OS

I hope to eventually use the laptop drive as the root to keep running costs down.
