Debian :: Coexistence Of 64 / 32 Bits Libs In Squeeze

Mar 22, 2011

There are three new "k1DZ 1n the Block" for CAD users in Linux :
Bricscad
Ares Commander Edition
Draftsight

there used to be Varicad, which also runs in 64 bits natively, as well as QCad ( 2D only ) and BRLCAD ( more of a solid modeler than a Drafting program ), both built from source. Those new K1dZ out there are awesome, but they only run in 32 bits. My system is Squeeze 64 Bits and has multilib enabled... i can install the *deb, and it complains about architecture, so i use --force.. default install is in /opt... still this asks for some libraruies which i do have for 64bits, but do not exist for 32...

So my questions are :
Should I install these 32 bits libraries to run the application ( mostly issues related to rendering ) they would land in /usr/lib32/...
But naming convention in apt or synaptic would still refer them by the same name as their 64 bits counterparts. How does apt (synaptic ) deals with this?

I find all this to much of an unnatural thing to do to my Squeeze install just to make an app fit and run. So far I can remove the app using synaptic but I am very reticent about installing those 32 bits specific libs required by the app. I already have the ia32-libs metapackage installed.

Software :: 32bit Program Still Not Running After Installing Ia32-libs On Debian Squeeze

Jun 1, 2011

I have a Debian Squeeze x64 VPS that I have been renting and I'm having some trouble getting the 32bit version of the Ventrilo server to run. I found alot of people with this problem since Ventrilo only has 32bit Linux servers and this solution seems to work for everybody but me. URL...t=798157 Could it be because of a newer version of ia32-libs is not providing a library that is considered obsolete but Ventrilo still needs?

General :: Upgrade 32 Bits Programs To 64 Bits On Opensuse 11.2

Jan 5, 2010

I'm quite new to linux and I recently (and courageously) upgraded the computer of my work from opensuse 11.0 32bits to opensuse 11.2 64bits.

Well, everything would be quite fine except that I still have some softwares 32 bits that have the 64 bits version available. I know that because, using YaST, I can see by the Installed software section that there are 'choices' of versions for some programs; these versions are 'i586' and 'x86_64', and many of them have the i586 version installed.

So, I wonder if there is some type of auto upgrade all programs which are i586 and have the matching x86_64 avaliable...

OpenSUSE Install :: No More Peaceful Coexistence Of Win7?

Dec 24, 2009

If I understand correctly, there is no more "Install Linux as a second OS, and Windows will run as it is. Linux won't disturb it". If Grub is installed on MBR, Windows 7 will not install service pack.

If the MBR is left untouched during the installation of Linux, the active flag has to be switched from Windows's partition to Linux's partition. This again will prohibit Windows 7 from installing a service pack. Thus installing Linux as a second OS and giving the computer to somebody who is not expert in partitioning and booting will lead to trouble if Windows is regularly used. Is this correct, and is there a solution as to not creating worries for the Windows users by installing Linux?

Debian Hardware :: RTL8187 - Ndiswrapper Isn't Working (64-bits Version)

Oct 7, 2010

My laptop has a Realtek 8187b usb wireless card. It was working using ndiswrapper and WinXP driver in Debian Sid (32-bits version). I cannot use rtl8187 module because I just can use it beside the access point. With Windows (XP, Seven) I can go to my bedroom and use wireless, with Debian and rtl8187 module I can't. Ndiswrapper solved this problem...

Yesterday I've installed Debian Sid (64-bits version) and ndiswrapper is not working anymore. I've tried a lot of drivers (XP, XP64, Vista, Vista64, Seven, Seven64). XP64 version crashes the computer and I need to reboot to use Debian again. My access point is a D-LINK 2640t.

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. Debian :: Installing Command Line Debian Squeeze System On Eee PC 701

May 29, 2011

I have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:

1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.

I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.
