CentOS 5 :: New Installation Of 5.5 Using Multiple Disks - Fusion

Jan 13, 2011

I've downloaded 7 ISO images in order to install CentOS as a Virtual Machine on Fusion. First disk goes through successfully, but when I try to "insert" 2nd disk, I get an error message "unable to access the cdrom". I've ejected 1st disk, mounted second. I tried all possible scenarios I could think of, but still getting an error message.

I see the disk mounted in a terminal:
/dev/disk1 600600 600600 0 100% /Volumes/CentOS_5.5_Final

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot On Multiple Disks?

Jul 7, 2010

I recently tried installing Lucid x86 on my system beside Windows 7 and managed to screw it up.

My disk setup is this;

Disk A = 3 partitions (1st partition=Windows 2&3 partitions=Data)
Disk B = 1 partition
Disk C = 3 partitions (1st partition=Data 2&3 partitions=Ubuntu & Swap)

Disk A = SATA and internal
Disk B = SATA to USB external
Disk C = SATA to USB external

I want to install Lucid on the 2nd partition on Disk C. And dual boot it with Windows on Disk A.

During Lucid setup i specified the partition for installation (C2) and asked for GRUB to install on Disk A (no partition specified) so GRUB is always used as the dual-boot manager even if the Lucid disk (Disk C) is ejected. Once installed and rebooted i was taken to the GRUB rescue prompt as no installation drive could be found (a long string of numbers (looked like a Disk ID number???) was also shown). Obvviiusly, i could not access either OS on my system at this point. I had my W7 DVD handy so it was just a case of recovering the windows boot manager and i could use my PC but how do i go about installing Lucid with this setup? Should i specify a partition for GRUB to install to? I have a hunch this is where i am going wrong but am too scared to try again and potentially balls things up.

Ubuntu Installation :: Which Disks Can Be Main Boot Disks

Mar 31, 2010

I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot. The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)

Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?

Ubuntu :: Copy Profiles To Multiple Hard Disks?

Nov 29, 2010

First and foremost, I really appreciate this newer release of Ubuntu 10.10. My boss wanted to use SLAX, but I had great experience with 8.10 and I have installed 10.10 on laptops and netbooks. on with the challenge for the day: I have configured a user's profile on 10.10 to startup Firefox in kiosk to go to our secure portal. The problem is I don't particularly care to REDO configure a user's profile session over and over.

So, if any of you whiz kids out there can come up with a better way to copy a user's profile...particularly the files that are used for Mozilla Firefox so that I can just copy and paste the files onto another hard drive with a fresh 10.10 that would be great.

The ONLY issue I have working with Linux is that I can not rapidly deploy my settings I have set for 'user' as I can with Windows. I am sure if there was a way to do this, deployment of Ubuntu 10.10 would go MUCH faster. As it stands, if I am able to pull this off...there will be a potential of removing Windows desktops. Which is fine for me because I can manage desktops a little easier on this platform than Windows.

This is what I have installed in Ubuntu:
IcedTea (for Java plugin for Firefox)
Profile Editor
R-Kiosk

All those work great with Firefox, but getting those installed on a new system is a bit daunting.especially when some users suggest doing cloning when in reality...I plan to do the install via LiveCD and THEN hopefully create the user on the fly in Terminal and copy the user files needed off a flash drive into the home/user folder

General :: Unable To Boot From Ssd With Multiple Hard Disks System?

May 2, 2011

I have a PC with 4 harddisks and one ssd drive, presently PC boots from the 1st harddisk and other harddisks (sometimes 1, 2 or 3, depends upon the requirement) are used for the storage. Now i want to boot the PC from SSD and use the other harddisks for the storage only. My problem is that when system boots it takes 1st harddisk as sda and SSD as sdb, if i am using only one harddisk, and if i use 2 harddisk it takes sdc as SSD. So i am not able to give fix boot point in menu.lst file, if i wish to use root filesystem from SSD.I am using 2.6.33.7 kernel and grub bootloader. I have tried using initrd with udev but not able to include and start udev properly in initrd. I am trying to boot from UUID or LABEL, but no success. Am i missing something in kernel to get the UUID or LABEL.

Fedora Security :: Selinux With Homedirs Spread Across Multiple Physical Disks/partitions?

Jun 10, 2010

By fiat I must distribute my homedirs across multiple physical disks/partitions. Unfortunately this is not open to discussion so obvious solutions like a lvm home partition are not available to me. The issue: Users created with homedirs on the main home partition (the one created as home during the f13 install) behave as expected, but if I create them on a different partition (home9 for the sake of this example) the users are not able to login (dropped back to login screen), nor run x-apps if su -'d to in a konsole.

If I 'su - <user-on-home9>' in a konsole, I get delivered to the /home9/<user-on-home9> as expected, but x-apps fail with the error: 'cannot open display: :0'. This can be temporarily fixed with the command 'xhost +SI:localhost:<user-on-home9>', but I would rather fix it permanently at the source.

This appears to be an selinux problem from the following. The contexts of the the two rootdirs are the same

% ls -Zd /home /home9
drwxr-xr-x. root root system_u:object_r:home_root_t:s0 /home
drwxr-xr-x. root root system_u:object_r:home_root_t:s0 /home9
but when I create the users (using useradd or the gui) their respective contexts differ:
% ls -Zd /home/user5 /home9/user6

[Code]...

So, my questions for you selinux experts are 1) is it possible to have homedirs spread across multiple partitions with selinux, and if so, how, 2) Why, even when I manually set the dir/file contexts to match a properly functioning user5 from /home, do users from /home9 still not work (as far as login and x-apps).

CentOS 5 Networking :: Multiple Nics With Multiple Gateway ?

Jun 16, 2009

I have a CentOS 5.3 box with three network interfaces in it. Each interface is attached to a separate VLAN and I want traffic to stay on each network segment. What I cant figure out is why I cannot get each interface to have its own gateway and everything gets sent through the default gateway. The basically takes my possible 3Gb total bandwidth and throws it down a single 1Gb pipe. Then on top of that, if I take down the interface (ifdown) that has the current default gateway,I loose contact to the other two interfaces. When I look at the routes, each one of the interfaces shows the gw as 0.0.0.0 and defers to the default route. So I delete the route and try to add a new route with:

[root@testsan ~]# ip route add 10.1.15.0/24 via 10.1.15.1 dev eth2

but end up with the error:

RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable

CentOS 5 :: Spin Down Disks When Idle (5.4)?

May 9, 2010

System Specs
3.2 GHz Dell GX280
Sans Digital TR5M-B in JBOD configuration (PCIe 1x)
CentOS 5.4 installed via QmailToaster instructions. Up to date via YUM.
No GUI (no KDE/Gnome), command line only.

My old server died and reinstalled based on above with no problems. All is running well. Box is used as mail/web/home disk network. I want to be able to spin down the drives in the Sans Digital box when idle as they are used mostly for bulk storage (video editing, etc...). The external enclosure on my old server automatically spun down idle drives so this has never been a concern. Google has not helped me so far (operator error?). I did see "hdparm" may work if the drives support it but I am not sure if this is the nest solution.

CentOS 5 :: New Disks (RAID1), Not Enough Space?

Jan 13, 2011

I recently followed this guide to create a RAID1 [URL]First I partitioned the disks with fdiskI made the RAID array with

mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1

Then I created the filesystem with

Today I made a samba-share out of /Video/Rorschach to easily put files in there from my windows7-machine (the plan is to steam from my CentOS-server to my HTPC which hasn't arrived yet).I started to put movies in there. It went just fine for a while but then I got this message:

No RAID or LVM. After connecting the dsisks and rebooting there are 28 new devices /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, ...

/dev/sdad. Going to /sys/class/scsi_disk will list all of them. Pick any one and go into device and you can cat the vendor and model and state is "Running." But try parted /dev/sdc and it just quitts. fdisk and mkfs produce errors. Attepting to read or write the device directly with dd fails. The mpt fusion kernel mods are present. I'm pretty sure this hardware is on the suuported list. And I've tried swapping out the card and cables in case of bad hardware. What am I missing to be able to partition and mkfs these disks?

CentOS 5 :: Persistent Device Names For ISCSI Disks?

It should be possible to gave the disks persistent names using udev rules. Now I tried to create different rules in "/etc/udev/rules.d/99-static-iscsi-names.rules" e.g.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Disks Switched Place In 2 Different RAID5 Arrays?

Feb 21, 2011

We have CentOS on an HP proliant g5 server and attached to it is an DAS with 3 branches of disks so 5 - 5 - 5 drives. Now what we had so far there is that every branch was on raid 5 and totaling 3 mounted drives each with 4TB (disks are 1Tb each). But a couple days ago something happened while i was replacing older drives with some bad sectors with new one. What I did is to remove old drive, put in new one, initialize and attach to array and rebuild starts. Now somehow 2 drievs ( as i was rebuilding 2 arrays at once) switched place.so disk on 1_1_5 and disk on 1_3_5 switched place. There coul dbe possibility that I made mistake and assigned them to different arrays when initializing but that is really hardly as i replaced one then later another so...

Anyway to the to the point. Is there painless option to remove 1 disk from array and then assign it to other array and then let raid rebuild everything normally?I;ve made backup of everything there so there is no fear of loosing anything...By the way at the same time when that switch happens a partition from 1 raid array completely dis speared and there is only unallocated space on that one right now.

CentOS 5 :: Swapping Hard Disks - Should I Try Using CloneZilla, Or PING Or Should Ghost Be Able To Cope??

May 21, 2009

I have built a CentOS machine just for playing around with and learning, however for the last few days I have had a couple of disk errors. So I want to replace it with another, and retain the data. I'm fairly new to Linux, but figured you could just image all partitions to another drive, so I tried this with Ghost 11. It imaged OK, but wouldn't boot - it went straight into Grub. What do I do here?

The original disk is just an 80gb IDE, the replacement disk is a 40gb IDE. I made sure it was in the same position on the IDE channel when attempting to boot from the new one (primary).I used Ghost to resize the partition down so that all partitions fitted onto the newer smaller disk.I didn't have much time to investigate further last night, so is it recoverable from the Grub prompt or have I gone about this the wrong way? Should I try using CloneZilla, or PING or should Ghost be able to cope?
