CentOS 5 Hardware :: USB Aircard Cold Boot Vs Warm Boot 5.2

If I boot my CentOS 5.2 box, then insert a Verizon aircard, then modprobe usbserial I end up with /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1. If I then warm boot (init 6) the machine and modprobe usbserial /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1 are there and usable. If I cold boot the machine (init 0 and power on) then modprobe usbserial, /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1 do not show up. If I unplug the aircard and plug it back in, the devices are created and ready to go. The machine will be in an unattended environment and I can not remove the device on every power up. How can I get the machine to find the usb device on the cold boot vs the warm boot? I don't understand why there is a difference to begin with...

Generally, my computer behaves okay. Sometimes, however, it crashes and is unstable until after I shut it down, wait ten seconds and boot it up again (what I'd possibly incorrectly call a warm boot). It only ever seems to need a "warm boot" after being off for over a day (e.g. when the in-laws visit for an evening and I don't use my computer from Wednesday night until Friday night). I've been poking and prodding the problem as best I know, but I've not worked out what the problem is. The kernel is still awake enough to respond to SysReq and so I can reboot cleanly if my machine locks up, but it was only in the past couple of days that I noticed segfault messages.
Sometimes Chromium will crash out and refuse to restart after that because of segfaults. Sometimes X locks up and I can't switch to another terminal. Sometimes X just restarts itself (normally alternating between Ctrl+Alt+F7 and F8), but once that happens then X won't stay stable. I've also once seen some "preload" command segfault on TTY1 (not sure which one it was). I've run memtest a couple of times and it passes a couple of iterations each time before I finish it. I've moved my memory around in case it isn't seating properly. I've tried hammering the processor with some of the performance testing in Parted Magic. I've swapped out the graphics card (partly to see if it was sending bad messages, because I've had other problems - reported in other threads) with no effect. The BIOS is still keeping the time, so it wouldn't seem to be anything battery related (plus the mobo is only about a year old).
I can't work out what causes it, but if I power off, wait and power on again then everything is fine. The only stack traces I've seen have been "segfault at 8 ip ..... error 4 in libstdc++.so.6.0.14" and "/usr/bin/Xorg - corrupted doubly linked list". Google wasn't much help, because so many segfault questions are people working with their own apps that they're writing (where it is their mistake) or some desktop app (where it is still the same type of mistake, but it can be run through GBD, unlike the entire OS). I'm running openSUSE 11.4 with all the latest updates, plus Gnome 3.

I just upgraded to F15 and it went well. But at the next and each subsequent cold boot the BIOS reports "Your system last boot fail or post interrupted Please enter setup to load default and reboot". The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.

This is one of those newbie questions about where I look to find error messages so that I can understand what the issues might be. My Fedora 12 setup invariably always hangs whenever I login following a cold boot. I login to x/g-nome, the screen clears and the initial background appears and then that's it.
I've been getting out of this by switching to another TTY (CTRL + ALT + 2), login as root and issue "shutdown -r now". System re-boots and I can login normally. I can see a stream of messages, I think relating to x scroll up the screen rapidly after the shutdown command. I'm not fast enough on the Pause button to read them. My question(s) then is... is there somewhere I can look to see what those messages might be? From the symptoms described initially, anyone have any thoughts on what the issue is likely to be?

I have full hdd encryption with a rather long key. The thing is the FBI might just show up at my house one day and have a warrant for my PC, and who wants the government looken through there life? I have a few plans on geting my PC shut down before they can get there hands on it. This is all well and good, but if they can sniff my key from the ram It doesn't matter what my key is or weather they find the computer on or off. Anyhow, i was wondering if there was some way I could add a script to the shut-down process that would over-write the ram.

Summary: Video fault on boot when KDE starts, but only after being shut down properly and turned off. Rebooting yields a perfect boot, removing power while running yields a perfect boot.
I'm working on a very strange problem for a client and I think I've hit a brick wall. In a nutshell, when the system is booted up all indications are normal until the GUI starts. I briefly get an hourglass on a black background (it's normally blue) and then just a black screen with a corrupt line of randomness across the top of the screen. The weird part is that this ONLY happens after the system is shut down and turned off.
If I kill power after I get the corrupt desktop, it will boot into KDE just fine. Also, if I reboot instead of shutdown it will boot correctly.
For now, I've told them to boot up until it freezes/corrupts video and then perform an alt+SysRq+REISUB to reboot into a usable system. After that it works as expected, so they basically just have to start up and then reboot if they ever turn the equipment off.
The equipment rack has an identical redundant computer drawer as a ready spare, complete with a seperate hard disk and all. One hard drive came pre-loaded from the manufacturer and the other was loaded with the same software by the client from media provided by the manufacturer. I've swapped hard drives with no change and the client has reported swapping the entire computer with the ready spare with the same result.
The problem reportedly only surfaced a few weeks ago, but of course they can't think of anything that "happened" a few weeks ago. This is all new equipment less than a year old, but it may have been sitting in a warehouse for a few years before being installed.

I tried to partition with P Magic but my windows xp would not boot afterwards, so I have gone cold turkey.....wiped the drive and installed linux. Debian is now the third one I've looked at and hope to stay here. Couple questions right off
1) Is firewall installed with debian installation or do I have to do something else?
2) are updates automatic?

What happens is on first boot, my Synaptics touchpad is not being recognised by the Kernel, so I have to boot a second time when it will start working.I have followed and tried loads of advice from different threads, including the copying and editing of the 11-x11-synaptics.fdi file under etc/hal/policy. Also the psmouse proto=any trick. The rmmod and further modprobe of psmouse. Restarting both HALD and UDEV both later and earlier in the boot procedure . The results of all of which is the same. I have installed Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 "Lenny" on a Compaq 510 laptop.
The problem am experiencing is that when I start it, it takes about 3 - 4 reboots before I get it to work without an automatic reboot.
I checked the dmesg command and the last part indicates the following:
I don't know what to do so as to enable the PCI interrupt that is should not reboot after a cold boot.

This on a Vostro 1220 Laptop w/ Intel 5300 wireless:
A.I have long boot up time.I think it's because of the eth0 network search which I don't use.I have an intel wireless 5300 card running.How can I speed up the boot time, i.e. disable or change the eth0 at boot, the searching?
B:When I restart or shutdown, the screen flashes repeatedly and gets some garbled colors along the top before finally rebooting looks like windows ME or something).This vostro has an intel x4500HD vid chipset in it.
C.How do I get into gnome configuration editor to turn on Metacity compositing? Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor doesn't do it. I don't do compiz, but need compositing.
D.I need to install Chromium Browser as it sync my bookmarks.I have RPMforge enabled btw also...how can I do that? I.e. rpm repo for chromium?
This will help me get off to a running start so I can get up to speed on CentOS..

I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?

3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.
I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?

I have a laptop that came with Windows Vista (64-bit) installed. I created a new partition and installed XP (also 64-bit) alongside it.Last night I shrunk my XP partition and created another new partition and installed Linux (CentOS 64-bit) on it. I made an error in judgment and didn't allocate enough space, so I need about 10 more gigs for the Linux partition. It boots up and runs, but I need about 10 more gigs of storage for the files I want to keep on the partition (and yes, they have to be on the partition, I definitely need to know how to do this, not a workaround)I went into Vista and shrunk the XP partition by 10 gigs, so now I have 10 gigs of free, non-partitioned space.
As it stands, when I start up the computer I get the GRUB boot loader. I can boot my Linux install or choose "Other" and be taken to the Vista boot loader. From there I can choose XP or Vista to boot.So, my question is... what is the best way to append the 10 gigs of free space to the Linux partition? Is this something I should do inside of Linux? I have the option to do it in Vista, but the partition shows up as "healthy" but without a file system type.I just don't want to screw up the boot loader, partitions or anything else.This isn't my area of expertise, so if anyone could give me a good suggestion or solid answer

have all ways been hiding in the background read not say a thinglets start well i look after 2 dell poweredge 2650 with 12 gig ram installed servers has been running fine onwell i though it was time to upgrade to 5 all went fine till reboot Memory for crash kernel (0x to 0x) not within permissible range ! well what i have been reading this is the norm for now What is mean by ignore it? LoLwell so i did the system keeps boot till i get to this linesbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file alot, and it shows. INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes ...so maybe its a memory issue so took 8 gig out left 4 in the system now it reboot alls good with only 4 gig of ram installed so is there a way to fix it to use all the ram can i get the system boot on 4 gig and then add the 8gig later on

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP rp5700 desktop unit. These units were originally sold as a Point of Sales unit I believe, but HP also markets it as a high life cycle server for SMB market.I tried to load CentOS on this unit via CD (created from downloaded ISO of course). It presents the initial CentOS banner page and waits for the obligatory "enter" to continue. It begins the boot process up to discovering the PCI stuff and just locks up, no response. I have to power down to restart.Since this does not even get to the point of installing. I am at a loss what to do next. I've Got one Problem with My Computer soon after success installation of when the boot-loader ask me to choose OS at CENTOS 5.4, multi boot boot-loader if i choose windows then computer tries to boot windows but fail and give the error message that there is a problem on reading the hard disk, But when i restart it and start with LINUX then computer start successful with no error message, now i do not know what to do cause i need to use Windows and all my programs are in windows..

I had a sata drive go down on my software raid array a couple days ago..After replacing the defective drive, I rebuilt it using fdisk to set partitions and mdadm to add the drive back into the raid array.After getting md2 to mount to /mnt I copied the /mnt/etc/fstab and /mnt/etc/mdadm.conf to the /etc directory and rebooted..When I boot, my /dev/md2 partition is not mounting to / It is not loading all of the services at boot time it should.. the size of /dev/md2 on / is even wrong.. it should be about 1.3TBwhen I manually mount /dev/md2 to /mnt I can access all of my data, through /mnt/var/www/vhosts and so on.. I am at a loss, why is the machine booting to this craziness?All of my data, that I know of can be accessed when md2 is mounted to /mnt[root@ESS000272 etc]# cat mdadm.conf

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

I had Windows XP Pro 32 bit and CentOS 5.4 installed on my Dell M6400 laptop and life was wonderful. Until I had to reinstall Windows. In the process, I reformated the C: partition of the drive where the Windows operating system was installed. I was careful NOT to reformat anything else. Now I cannot boot CentOS. The drive that has both the Windows and CentOS still shows the same partitions as were there before I reinstalled Windows, namely:
NTFS (C:) 171.82 GB
/boot 102 MB
(F:) 60.96 GB
is where my CentOS partition has all of my linux data and apps. I assume /boot should be the boot partition for CentOS I use Acronis OS Selector to show the partitions to boot. Now CentOS doesn't show as an option even if I go through the process of trying to detect a CentOS boot partition using OS Selector. I have researched this in the forums but have not found anything that was of help. There was a thread from someone who had trouble booting Ubuntu on a system with Windows Vista and CentOS but I did not see anything there that looked like it would help in my situation.

I'm having trouble adding the ports to the firewall. I have ports 2230, 2236, 2240, and 2242 tcp and local host added to the museeks setup. When trying to connect, I am not able to get past the museek port test.
What additional steps do I need to take to enable connecting? I've tried both passive and active, localhost and tcp. Because our connections vary with wireless, ethernet, and aircard, we nee to be able to use the server when possible.
