General :: Commands Not Found / What To Do?

May 11, 2011

I'm having problems with Common Shell Environment Variables. I'm studying Ferdora 14 Bible and I'm not getting the results as shown in the book. Please take a look at what I'm doing and let me know where I'm going wrong.

As you can see I start out as a User by the $ prompt, according to the book I should get the following information: /bin/bash. As you can see I get nothing, so I entered into SU mode and ran the same command and still I get no information,
This isn't the only variable I'm having problems with.
Have I done something wrong code...

Debian :: All Terminal Commands Not Found

Mar 9, 2016

I'm messing around with a new install of Debian 8, trying to get a sandbox of Oracle DB 12c up and running in an ESXi environment.

open-vm-tools was giving me troubles (resizing the window didn't make the resolution change), and Oracle DB was fighting me with environmental variables.

Well, while I was troubleshooting the Oracle issue, I needed to reboot. When it came back up, I couldn't log in. When I attempt to log in using known working credentials, the screen goes black like it should, and then loads the login screen again.

I SSH into the box and try to run commands, but every single command I run returns "Command not found" including "ls" "su" "cd".

I'm able to boot into recovery mode, where the commands work under root, but I'm not sure what to fix....

General :: Ubuntu - Cannot Execute Basic Commands (ps, Ls, Ifconfig) - File Not Found

May 4, 2011

When I try execute a variety of basic commands (including ps, ls, ifconfig, locate), I receive the error 'no such file or directory'.

Here are some suggestions that I've found online, that I have tried without success: I did a 'whereis ps' and found the file in the /bin/, and have checked that '/bin' appears when I do 'echo $PATH' I did a filesystem check which showed my hard drive as being clean I tried doing a 'sudo chmod 777 ps' but was told that I dont have permission. I don't think permissions for these files would have changed though (and I can't check as I can't run the 'ls' command).

The booting steps does not ask the for media check step.

The below methods have been tried to solve the problem:

- Upon burning the DVD image , selected the DVD read speed: 8x. Upon burning the DVD selected 18x for burning. and then tried to boot with that DVD

- At the boot prompt entered : linux hdc=cdrom replaced hdc=hdb but the error remains.

CentOS 5 :: Installing Sysbench, Missing Automake Commands?

Nov 6, 2010

As a premise let me say I'm a debian guy so I'm not really an expert on every aspect of how Centos work and if the following questioms seem dumb, I'm sorry :D What I have to for a school project is to use Xen. After two days of cursing I've managed to install it correctly and so I've installed a domU Centos 5.5.

Now I need to install sysbench on this domU and run some tests. I've found this guide: [URL].. But I can't find some commands. Basically this is what I have to do

# tar -xvzf sysbench-0.4.12.tar.gz
# cd sysbench-0.4.12
# libtoolize --force --copy
# ./autogen.sh
# ./configure
# make
# make install

the problem is it doens't find libtoolize. I've tried to search it with 'yum search" but with no luck.Where can I find this package? Or is it a command include in some other package? In that case how can I solve this problem? Next problem is autogen.sh. It says I don't have aclocal but automake in installed as a package.
